Harness the Power of Nature

As I lay on my hammock out in this glorious yet unseasonable weather in Pennsylvania today, the sounds and smells of spring are upon us. The crocuses have already begun to bloom and the birds are chirping much earlier than usual. I can’t remember a time ever when I’ve been able to lay out in the sun with short sleeves in February. Our environment is changing. I can’t say I am complaining today, as I do not like cold weather, but it does worry me that Mother Earth has been damaged by us humans that have been careless and have taken advantage of her for too long.

Because of this, it is important for us to remember to give back to her whenever we snip an herb for a spell or meal or a branch for a wand, or even stand in her moonlight or drink from her waters. It is our duty to give her an offering of thanks. Some like to spread tobacco around the soil of the plant as a thank you. I, often, like to use diatomaceous earth, compost or even the old bedding chips from my chickens. It is important if you want to harness the powers of nature that you provide more nutrients back.

Today is the day to take advantage of those refreshing powers that the sun has to offer us. Open your windows, light some incense or candles and let any negative energy that has been cooped up inside your home for months blow out as the new fresh positive energy blows in.  This is the type of day I like to do a smudging in my house with herbs that I had grown the past summer. My favorite is Sage as it is wonderful for healing and cleansing the environment.

To do this, clear your space of clutter and mess and open up windows and curtains and allow for clean air to enter. Light your sage (or other herbs) on fire and then fan the smoke with a feather or your hand. Wave the smoke into all corners, across doorways and into shadow spaces.  Once the space is cleared, allow the sage bundle to either burn out or gently press it out.  Then bury the smudge stick in your back yard as you thank Mother Earth for blessing you, your home and those you love.

Enjoy this beautiful weather and spread positive energy out into the world!
